Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life

Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life

Discover the secrets to a long, healthy, and fulfilling life with "Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life" by Héctor García and Francesc Miralles. This insightful book delves into the Japanese concept of ikigai, or a "reason for being," which is believed to be a key factor in the remarkable longevity of the residents of Okinawa, a Japanese village known for having the world’s highest percentage of centenarians. Through interviews with these vibrant centenarians, the authors uncover how the principles of ikigai—where passion, mission, vocation, and profession intersect—contribute to their happiness and longevity. The book reveals the residents' daily practices, from their nutrient-rich diets and active lifestyles to their strong community bonds and purposeful work. "Ikigai" provides practical advice and tools to help readers discover their own ikigai, offering a blend of cultural wisdom and actionable steps towards a life filled with purpose, health, and joy. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in enhancing their well-being and finding deeper satisfaction in everyday life.

A Wild Sheep Chase

A Wild Sheep Chase

A Wild Sheep Chase by Haruki Murakami is a strange, offbeat novel that blends a detective story with surreal, dreamlike elements. It follows an unnamed, easygoing narrator who gets pulled into a bizarre search for a mysterious sheep with a star-shaped mark on its back. The story kicks off when a powerful figure in Japan’s underworld pressures the narrator into finding this sheep, which seems to hold some kind of mystical influence. The book is set in late 1970s Japan, moving from urban Tokyo to the cold, isolated landscapes of Hokkaido. Along the way, the narrator is joined by his girlfriend, whose unusually perceptive ears give the story an added touch of the weird. They meet a cast of quirky characters—a shadowy secretary, a reclusive professor obsessed with sheep, and a man in a sheep costume who speaks in riddles. What stands out is how ordinary things—bars, hotels, quiet towns—become strange and otherworldly. Murakami mixes humor, loneliness, and philosophical musings, all wrapped up in a plot that meanders like a road trip with no clear destination. The novel touches on themes like identity, power, and the search for meaning, but it never hits you over the head with them. Things just kind of unfold, sometimes making sense, sometimes not—and that seems to be the point. It’s not a fast-paced thriller, nor is it a typical mystery. The journey is more about the odd encounters and the narrator’s inner reflections than solving a straightforward puzzle. If you’re into stories where reality feels slippery and the line between the ordinary and the surreal is blurred, this one might stick with you.

He becomes so wrapped up with the work and its unusual author that, soon, his previously placid life begins to come unraveled. As Aomame’s and Tengo’s narratives converge over the course of this single year, we learn of the profound and tangled connections that bind them ever closer: a beautiful, dyslexic teenage girl with a unique vision; a mysterious religious cult that instigated a shoot-out with the metropolitan police; a reclusive, wealthy dowager who runs a shelter for abused women; a hideously ugly private investigator; a mild-mannered yet ruthlessly efficient bodyguard; and a peculiarly insistent television-fee collector.

The Brand Gap: How to Bridge the Distance Between Business Strategy and Design

The Brand Gap: How to Bridge the Distance Between Business Strategy and Design

The Brand Gap is the first book to present a unified theory of brand-building. Whereas most books on branding are weighted toward either a strategic or creative approach, this book shows how both ways of thinking can unite to produce a “charismatic brand”―a brand that customers feel is essential to their lives. In an entertaining two-hour read you’ll learn: • the new definition of brand • the five essential disciplines of brand-building • how branding is changing the dynamics of competition • the three most powerful questions to ask about any brand • why collaboration is the key to brand-building • how design determines a customer’s experience • how to test brand concepts quickly and cheaply • the importance of managing brands from the inside • 220-word brand glossary

The Design Of Everyday Things

The Design Of Everyday Things

Even the smartest among us can feel inept as we fail to figure out which light switch or oven burner to turn on, or whether to push, pull, or slide a door. The fault, argues this ingenious -- even liberating -- book, lies not in ourselves, but in product design that ignores the needs of users and the principles of cognitive psychology. The problems range from ambiguous and hidden controls to arbitrary relationships between controls and functions, coupled with a lack of feedback or other assistance and unreasonable demands on memorization. The Design of Everyday Things shows that good, usable design is possible. The rules are simple: make things visible, exploit natural relationships that couple function and control, and make intelligent use of constraints. The goal: guide the user effortlessly to the right action on the right control at the right time. The Design of Everyday Things is a powerful primer on how -- and why -- some products satisfy customers while others only frustrate them.

Piri Piri Roast Chicken

Piri Piri Roast Chicken

Piri Piri roast chicken is arguably the best dish for those who cherish bold flavours and succulent meat. The dish’s main draw is the Piri Piri sauce—a fiery blend of chilli peppers, garlic, lemon, and herbs that hails from Portuguese cuisine but is infused with African influence, giving it a tantalizing kick. The chicken is marinated in this spicy sauce, allowing the robust flavours to penetrate deeply and ensuring every bite is infused with spice and zest. Roasted to perfection, the skin becomes crispy and golden, while the meat inside remains tender and juicy. This delightful contrast in textures, combined with the heat from the Piri Piri sauce, offers a sensory experience that is both satisfying and exhilarating. The dish’s simplicity, requiring few ingredients but delivering complex flavour profiles, makes Piri Piri roast chicken not just a meal but an experience—one that celebrates the harmony of heat, spice, and expert culinary technique.

Nando's

Nando's

Nando’s stands out as the best fast-food restaurant by successfully combining casual dining with high-quality, flavourful food that boasts a unique cultural heritage. Renowned for its flame-grilled piri-piri chicken, the restaurant’s roots in Southern African-Portuguese cuisine provide a distinctive spicy twist that sets it apart from typical fast-food offerings. Nando’s emphasises freshness and quality, marinating their chicken for 24 hours in their signature "peri-peri" sauce which customers can select based on their preferred spice level. This personalised spice choice, coupled with a vibrant and welcoming ambiance, makes Nando’s not just a place to eat, but a culinary experience. The brand's commitment to sustainability and ethical sourcing, including their use of higher welfare chickens and eco-friendly practices, resonates well with a globally-conscious clientele, further establishing its reputation as not only a food chain but a responsible corporate citizen.

Portuguese Cuisine

Portuguese Cuisine

Portuguese cuisine stands as a prime contender for the title of the best food in the world, thanks to its rich culinary traditions, emphasis on fresh ingredients, and a harmonious blend of flavours that reflect its historical maritime prowess. Here's a compelling argument that underscores why Portuguese food deserves this accolade: Diversity Influenced by History and Geography Portuguese food is a palimpsest of the various cultures that have interacted with Portugal over centuries. From the Age of Discoveries when Portuguese explorers brought back spices from Africa and Asia, to the integration of New World crops such as tomatoes and potatoes, the cuisine reflects a synthesis of global flavours uniquely blended with traditional Iberian techniques. This historical melding of east and west, north and south, makes Portuguese cuisine not only diverse but uniquely rich and varied. Focus on High-Quality, Fresh Ingredients At the heart of Portuguese cuisine is the use of fresh, high-quality ingredients. The country's extensive coastline provides an abundance of fresh seafood, from sardines and bacalhau (dried and salted cod) to octopus and various shellfish, which are staples in the Portuguese diet. The emphasis on fresh, local produce and the traditional farming and fishing techniques enhance the natural flavours of the ingredients, allowing for dishes that are both simple and profoundly satisfying. Culinary Techniques that Enhance Flavour Portuguese cooking methods themselves are a testament to a culinary tradition that prioritises flavour. The use of 'cataplana' (a clam-shaped cooker) seals in the flavours and juices of the ingredients, while techniques such as grilling over charcoal infuse dishes with a smoky richness that is hard to replicate. The simplicity of seasoning, primarily using piri-piri (small fiery chillies), garlic, and olive oil, underscores the natural tastes of the ingredients rather than overpowering them.

Italki

Italki

Italki is a platform connecting language teachers, mostly native speakers, with students. You can book, pay, and schedule your classes directly through their website. The classes are one on one, just you and the teacher, and conducted over a video call. I used Italki successfully before going to Thailand for the first time. My wife who is Thai gave me an Italki gift card. There are plenty of teachers to chose from and the rates are affordable. You'll pay anywhere from $10 to about $20 for a class.

ThaiPod101's Live YouTube Channel

ThaiPod101's Live YouTube Channel

Learning a new language is hard, you need a lot of repeated exposure to the same words to make them stick. Here's the trick I use. I open ThaiPod101's live channel and let it run in the background while I do something else. For example, I can have it open while cooking dinner or tidying up. Even if I look at the screen only occasionally, I still get the benefits of being repeatedly exposed to Thai vocabulary. This works particularly well in combination with other learning methods. If you have a smart TV or a Chromecast, you can even play it on your TV instead of regular TV channels. The channel runs 24/7 and replays ThaiPod101 lessons.

Drops

Drops

Drops is a language learning app that focuses on teaching vocabulary through quick, visual-based games. The idea is to make learning feel more like playing, with short sessions you can fit into your day. Instead of grammar-heavy lessons, it leans on matching words with pictures, swiping, and tapping to help words stick in your memory. The app covers over 40 languages, from common ones like Spanish and French to less common ones like Hawaiian and Ainu. You get common, everyday words and phrases to start with—things you’d actually use in conversation. It’s built for people who want to learn at their own pace, and there are features like reminders and streaks to keep you coming back. Drops keeps lessons short—usually five minutes—so it’s easy to squeeze in some learning while waiting for coffee or riding the train. There’s a free version with ads and limits on daily use, or you can pay for Premium to get rid of ads, unlock all content, and use it offline. Overall, it’s not going to teach you complex grammar or how to hold a full conversation right away, but if you’re looking to build your vocabulary in a fun, no-pressure way, it does the job.
